Coaches
Kevin Chester
2017 is Kevin's fourth year as head coach of the AHI Swim Team. He was born in Torrance, California, and raised in Palm Desert, just outside of Palm Springs. Kevin’s passion for swimming started at the age of 6. He has competed in swimming at the local and national club level for Palm Springs Piranhas, and at the high school level with Palm Desert High School. After graduating high school, he went on to swim and compete for UC Davis.
While attending UC Davis in 2004, Kevin began his coaching career at Davis Senior High School, as a volunteer assistant coach. That same year, the Davis Girls team went on to win a CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Sac-Joaquin Section title. Following that high school season, Kevin began coaching the Winters Summer League Recreation team, as well as the Winters High School Varsity swim team.
From 2004-2012, Kevin continued as the Head Coach for both the Winters Summer League Recreation team, and the Winters High School Varsity swim team. In his very first year with Winters High School, there were only 10 swimmers on the team. Throughout those eight years with Winters High School, the team saw tremendous growth in numbers and went from 10 swimmers to as many as 35 in a single season.
Kevin had much success with the Winters High School Varsity swim team. The Boys team won 7 league titles, 4 NSCIF Division II Section runner-up titles, 1 NSCIF Division II Section title, and 1 NSCIF Top 16 Section runner up title. The Girls team won 4 league titles, 3 NSCIF Division II Section runner-up titles, and 1 NSCIF Division II Section title. Kevin also had his Boys 400 Free Relay go undefeated 3 years in a row; two boys won NSCIF Male Swimmer of the Year, and Kevin was named 2011 NSCIF Varsity Boys Coach of the Year.
Kevin graduated from UC Davis with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication with a minor in Education. Upon graduating from UC Davis, Kevin went on to Sacramento State University to earn his Teaching Credential. Kevin is also a certified coach through USA Swimming, as well as an ASCA Level 2 Coach.
When he is not around the pool deck, or in the water, he enjoys spending quality time with his wife Melissa, daughter Camryn, son Clayton, and dog Twilight.
Mike Bumanlag
Hi, my name is Mike Bumanlag. 2017 is my third year as an assistant coach with AHI. I was born in the Philippines and moved to California in 2009. I played several sports growing up (all land sports) from basketball to Track and field. I learned how to swim about 5 years ago and swam competitively for Solano Community College. Since then, swimming has become my passion. I love being part of a team and how competitive swimming challenges me physically and mentally.
I received my lifeguard and CPR/AED certification during the summer of 2014 and have almost a year of experience on teaching swim lessons and coaching swim team. This will be my first year coaching for AHI swim team and I can’t wait because I know I will learn more things along the way and I am very excited about it!
LET’S GO AHI!
